The Japanese terminology is like a universal language, enabling martial artists from all over the world to communicate at least on the level of martial arts if not on the level of culture. You say a technique in Japanese people at least know what yo…

Richard I watched your example utube several times. I watch the Sensei start what I have been taught as Sesshoku Te: His movement to the point of contact with the target. But he stops it amost mid way. The hiki-te hand and the striking hand just rev…

Interesting thread; perfect excuse for me to poke around at the convocation! I remember seeing the second video example and technique at a tournament. I saw a guy use it as a way to jazz up a board break in Tae Kwon Do. Not sure is that is workabl…

Interesting thread Richard, I reviewed John's video and yours. I think I see what you are getting at here but slowed down – both videos are really similar. My thoughts: The first video seems to be trying to throw a punch without telegraphing the…

Jon, Thanks for the clip. It isn't quite what I am trying to figure out. In the clip the demonstrator doesn't snap the hip back. The image I have is centered on snapping the hip back at contact. Perhaps I can find a clip that shows something closer.…

Hey John, did you know you can actually embed the videos here? Give it a try.

Do you mean double hip punch? If so this video clip describes it quite well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRqfYwhsQdQ While it's a great description and clearly demonstrates the power from this technique, it's possible to get more..........

Just tell me a bit about your spouse. I'll put together the cartoon. Is she a crazy shopper? Does she raise Poodles? Just give me a little something to work with and we will Freak her on Friday.

Osu!! Kimura Sensei

Congrads on 51 years of martial arts. I have just found this comment wall that convocation of combat gives us. I also missed you comments to mine on my wall. I will start with...with 51 years...should I adress you as Roshi, Shihan ...I hope no I have not been in error if I have...Shitsuree shimashita....
You sure have found yourself in almost every area of martial life that I would have loved to have walked. I have 19 years of law enforcement service here in New York, and I am 44. I am starting my teaching knockdown fighting last year. I was told by Flynn Shihan I have 80% or 4/5 of my karate left to learn. I respect this man, and have been learning he is more than correct. We do not have a shushibo kata in our school. We have Gojushiho and I have been taught a Kun Kata call Shushiho kun kata.. at Gasshuku 2 years ago....Flynn Shihan taught but did say it was not kyukushin-kai bo kata. I was wondering if some one got sushiho bo miss spelled. My japanese is so poor that i can see this happen....just my 3 cents.

I am being called to the store by my real boss...

I will look forward to writing soon....

Sensei Kimura...
Osu! I have so many questions of bunki in kata, I have only studied Kyokushin karate....being a Kimura, would you be a bloodline to THE KIMURA Sensei??
I was also wondering if you have studied with Shihan Bobby Lowy, who I also believe is in Honolulu...

Wow, that is some life. I can only hope to study karate for as long as you have. The karate I have trained in for a mere 9 years (although that's definitely worth something!) is based on Gojo Ryu. Our main katas: Empi, Taikyoku Shodan and Nidan, Gekisai Dai Itchi and Ni, Sanchin, Saifa, Tensho, Seiyunchin, Bassai-Dai, Shisochin and Sanseiru. We have two additional katas: Lin Wane Kune and Flight of the Striking Tiger, both based on a Chinese style (I'll have to ask for the names again. They are escaping me at the moment). I absolutely adore kata. There are a few other katas based on those found in the Sekaran system that we learn above shodan. It's just lovely overall and I train kata as much as I can. There's always something new to be learned.

Favorite quote(s)?
自他共栄。Jita Kyoei Roughly translated, the concept is by working together we can achieve our goals. This was penned by Jigoro Kano Sensei, the founder of Kodokan Judo. For those out there with language curiosity, the breakdown of the characters are 自(Self)他(Others)共(Together)栄(Flourish)。
What is your primary, current martial arts style, if any?
Karate
In what styles have you trained extensively in the past?
Goju Ryu
Kyokushinkai
Kodokan Judo

After passing half a century in martial arts

Whew. Time flies. In 10 more days I will be 58! Of those years I have been involved in martial arts for 51 years. Starting off in Judo at the age of six and picking up Goju Ryu Karate at the age of 21. To satisfy my urge for "reality checks", entered the full contact word of Kyokushinkai at 23.
Along the way, finished up 28 years of Federal Service in Japan and retired last year. Returned to my home in Hawaii and got hit with incredibly high-cost of living here, resulting in returning to the labor force.
I started a Dojo in Yokohama, Japan which is in its 18th year and is now being run by several of my students. I have started a Dojo here in Honolulu and also help out at a friend's Dojo.
I feel that I have come full circle in my martial arts and currently enjoying questioning and analyzing all that I have learned in the past 51 years, especially Katas.
Hope to have some interesting discussions with regard to Katas with fellow Convocation members.
Aloha
