Aloha all,
It has been a long time since I contributed anything. Hawaii has been hit hard with the current economic situation. Especially in tourism and hotel industries.
I am just grateful I can find time to continue to practice and even more thankful that my wife is able to take care of the Dojo when I have to work extra hours to cover for staff shortages at the hotel.
Hope everyone is doing OK and are able to practice.
Aloha
Richard

Please bear my poor attempt at translation.
There is nothing more enticing than a chance encounter between humans.
Hope to see lots of discussions!
Aloha

Aloha, John
My knowledge of Tracy Kenpo is very limited. Is this Kenpo style connected to Kajukenpo which originated out from here in Hawaii?
Also, how is Kata or Forms viewed in Kenpo?

Hello All,

I'm John Zimmer. I've owned a Tracy's Karate studio in the 80's. I've fought some point karate with modest success in So Cal. I enjoy teaching although I've not done any since the late 90's. I wanted to do full contact karate in the early 80's and trained for six-months... All I remember about that point in my life is I was a giant sore that would go jogging in the mornings before work and go into the school after work and stretch/warm up so I could do another workout. :)

It was kind of funny but I've never been in as good shape as I was but felt worse! Anyway after doing a couple of exhibition bouts I gave up on that as PKA karate (the big one at the time) did not pay very well and I got married (financially had to make some decent money).

Kenpo is not really that traditional but compared to MMA, Mui Thai and such - we feel very formal.

I enjoy blogging about self-defense, karate, mma and any other martial arts issues for fun.

I thought I'd start this off... please feel free to use me as a sounding board as just one opinion in the sea of karate voices. I normally enjoy chiming in with my 2-cents.

Regards,

John
