Dear members,
As a general rule, The Martial Arts Forum does not make a habit of asking much from its members, however, we are running a short psychological experiment exploring various aspects of Social Psychology and we would greatly appreciate your participation.
It does not take long, and can be easily accessed at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/axwu88
Thank you for your participation!
Kind Regards,
Max Greene

I see that a "Max Greene" just joined the convocation. Given that his forum has over 2,000 members this can't be a bad thing for the Convocation.
Hi Bob - this was a fun survey... I feel a little bloodthirsty in these kinds of situations because I don't like to stop until I know I am not in danger. In some of the videos it showed a guy avoiding the bat or knife, striking and then running away (while the bad guy still had the weapon)... that gets me nervous.. While I do not go for overkill if I have the advantage (unless there is no other way like maybe a gang attack) but I do want to continue until I know the attacker cannot follow me or will not wake up.
Karate practitioners are not cops... no responsibility to take prisoners or put oneself in greater danger by stopping before the fight is decisively won.
I would not run away with the attacker still armed unless there was more than one attacker (or I could not handle the situation). Rather I would knock the guy out and take the weapon away from him.
All in all this was a fun survey but I think perhaps the academics that are running this might not fully understand how keep yourself safe.
It looks like you can rate the appropriatnes of each situation. So I suspect they made the videos to be provocative.
I agree with you: Martial artists are not cops. I also agree that running away while the attacker is armed is plain stupid!
I'll try to monitor the forum on Facebook and e-mail the author. I'd like a summary of the responses from all participants. If I get that I'll post it here and on my blog.
I have yet to fill it out. I'm at a conference and am living in airports, etc. I plan to maybe Monday PM or Tue esday.
I thought I'd share a little good will and cross promote. That facebook forum has several thousand members and I'm sure some blog so maybe a few will join us here.
Anyhow, I'm not one of the academics that created that survey!
;-)
I'll give it a look and then respond to your comments.
That was a fun survey! I thought the vids were quite entertaining and I definitely chose the middle road. Some of them were very excessive, but I suppose if you had no choice....well, by all means protect yourself! From this female's perspective it's all about getting your attacker away from you and hurt to the point where they cannot chase you.
Notice how they baited you with profanity? Not only did the attackee cuss but so did the attacker!
I know that influenced how I answered because calling someone a name leads to escalation. That's why back in the day when I was with the DOC they hammered us not to swear at inmates or raise or voice.
